Let’s hope this is the first of many. Twitter allows you 140 characters to get your point across, and while that space can often be used to share valuable information, it can also be used to spread hateful messages. Today, for the first time ever, Twitter has shut down and banned an account using a new function unveiled earlier this year. The account @hannoverticker belongs to a Neo-Nazi group and has been blocked, albeit only in Germany, because it has content deemed illegal in that country. Twitter announced earlier this year a “country withheld content” function, which allows them to take down accounts that spread content considered illegal in that jurisdiction. The group also had their YouTube account and website shut down.
