Around 30 people came out to Abbotsford West MLA Mike DeJong’s office Wednesday afternoon to let the government know they were against any pipeline expansions in BC.
The protest was just one of dozens at MLA offices all over BC.
Protest organizer John Vissers says he thinks Enbridge had no idea there would be this much opposition to the Northern Gateway proposal.
“The proponents for Enbridge were clearly caught by surprise. And frankly I think Enbridge is dead. I don’t believe it’s going to proceed, there’s just too much opposition. I believe that the financial backers are becoming frightened.”
Vissers says his big concern is with the proposed twinning of the Kinder Morgan pipe that runs through the Fraser Valley.
“They’ve got a bad track record here in the Fraser Valley. They’ve had two significant spills already. They’ve got 60 year old infrastructure that they want to run diluted bitumen through. Those pipelines and that system were never designed to carry diluted bitumen and we know that this is going to be a big problem for them.”
Vissers says although a lot of attention has been paid to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway project, he’s determined to not let the Kinder Morgan proposal slip under the radar.
