Environment Minister Terry Lake says he’s still not concerned that ash that was shipped from a Burnaby Incinerator to the Cache Creek landfill poses any risk to the environment, but he is concerned about possible non-compliance when it comes to the company involved. Covanta, which runs the incinerator, failed to submit reports on time detailing the testing results on the ash.  It’s been reported that the 1800 tonnes of ash contained 6 times the allowable limit of toxins.  Lake says there is currently nothing to indicate any risk whatsoever to human health or environmental safety, but a formal investigation has been launched into the response to possible concerns.  Meantime, the ash is being moved to a remediation site in Alberta.

Critics of Waste to Energy here in the valley are pointing to this case as a great example of why Metro Vancouver can’t be trusted when it claims incineration is safe.
