mosquitoThe Fraser Valley Regional District is already rolling out its mosquito control program, hoping to give us a bite-free summer.

Environmental services manager Stacey Barker says conditions aren’t super favorable for mosquito larva this year.

“Snowpack levels throughout much of the Fraser River watershed are relatively average this year, or slightly below average. Which means a relatively normal freshet this year, and that corresponds into a relatively normal mosquito abundance.”

Barker says FVRD efforts will only get around 80% of the larva, and says people can help out by regularly changing out standing water in bird baths or plant dishes, turning their compost piles, and covering rain barrels.

She also suggests setting up a bat box in your backyard to attract bats, who eat mosquitos.
