Showing Off

The young things probably won’t know what I’m talking about, but back when I was a young thing just barely old enough to buy a drink I saw a movie that raised the bar for coolness behind the bar.  I’m talking about a young Tom Cruise.  I’m talking about Cocktail.  Okay, the storyline was lame and completely forgettable but I’ll bet no one has forgotten the images of two bartenders flipping bottles back and forth and shaking their hips,

all while mixing incredibly cool cocktails for scores of rabid women lining the bar.  Heck, I’d have one too if I could get someone to make it like that!

In recent years we have witnessed a cocktail resurgence featuring the martini glass which now holds an array of interesting ingredients way beyond simply gin, vermouth, and an olive on a toothpick.  Yes my friends, we need to make sure we are riding the crest of that wave when we prepare to host our parties this year.  Now, I’m not saying that anyone expects you to be able to flip bottles behind the bar, but mixing drinks is simple when you have the right tools.  The first thing you need is a recipe book, a little manual of mixology secrets if you will… and we’ve sourced a great one called the Bartender’s Black Book.  It has over 2,800 drink recipes in it with a complete list of the latest and hottest martinis including instructions for mixing, garnishing, and serving them.  There’s also a fantastic wine section written by Robert Parker who is one of the world’s most respected wine reviewers and writers.

After picking up the Bartender’s Black Book at Whatcom Wine & Spirits, you’ll also find all the ingredients you need.  We stock a full selection of premium spirits, flavoured spirits, liqueurs, and the most popular mixes.  With all of this amazing new stuff lining your bar and some knowledge at your fingertips, why not show off a little in front of your friends?

Now, to all of the young things reading this, go check out the Cocktail movie trailer on YouTube.
