Sometimes I Go Out

Most of the time I do not go out.  I like to cook and believe that I do it well, I also like to know what is going into my meals so that I can keep track of what I am putting into myself.  But sometimes on special occasions, I do go out.

Meeting with my friend Kathy is always a special occasion.  Fortunately, Kathy is the Executive Director of Chilliwack’s Downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA) so she knows where to find the best food close to home.  We met for dinner at Evangeline’s on Mill Street and what a nice surprise it was to arrive at 7pm and find the place already packed and a guitar and flute jazz duo providing live entertainment.  Kathy and I both chose the 8oz sirloin with sautéed vegetables and a Caesar salad to start.  Then we got to solve the dilemma of which wine to have with it.  We honed in on the Heartland Stickleback Red which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Dolcetto, and Grenache from Southern Australia.

The wines at Heartland are made by Ben Glaetzer of the Barossa Valley who is best known as the ‘Young Winemaker of the Year’ in 2004 and for his cult wine Amon Ra.  We knew these grapes had been in good hands and that what would come out of the wine bottle would be delicious.  In the glass the wine was an inky-opaque purple red and the Cabernet Sauvignon introduced itself immediately upon the nose with its typical black currant aromas and whiff of eucalyptus.  The berry fruit from the Shiraz was also there along with its promise of spice.  On the palate I found warm jammy blackberry and plum fruit augmented by some nice raspberry and cassis flavours, balanced acidity, and moderate tannins to complement the steak.  Over all, it was a great combination and a really nice dining experience.

The Heartland Stickleback Red is available at Whatcom Wine & Spirits for $18.99 plus deposit
