compostThe City of Abbotsford wants to remind residents that food waste has to go in a compost bin for curbside collection, not in regular garbage.

That policy has been in for a couple of years now, but solid waste manager Barry Azevedo says they have to crack down more because of Metro Vancouver’s food waste ban.

“What that meant is that if we were picking up garbage from a curbside and dropping off garbage at the Matsqui transfer station, then we could potentially be fined if they found that the garbage contained more than 25% food waste.”

Azevedo says the more food waste goes into composting the better for the city, because tipping fees for composting are 40% less than they are at the transfer station.
