Nice to not have any labour disruptions as the kids head back to school today.
Abbotsford Superintendent Kevin Godden says he’s looking forward to having everyone back.

“Welcome back!  This is going to be a great year for the Abbotsford School District on all fronts…our academic, our athletics, the arts…we have so much to be proud of in terms of offering the best possible education for kids.”

The opening of the new school of science and business at Rick Hansen and a new aviation program for secondary students in the district are two of the big highlights this fall.

He is quite happy that for the first time in a couple years, school is starting on time.

In Chilliwack, Superintendent Evelyn Novak says the district’s multi year strategic plan will be at the top of the board’s agenda.

“Our board is putting on the final touches on it at a planning meeting here this fall.  We’re looking to firm up our continued work in the area of literacy and numeracy.  We’re also looking at the culture of our district and the relationships we have here in the district.”

Some teachers this year will also be playing around with the new BC Curriculum.  It will be mandated next school year, but some teachers are working with it already, basically taking it for a “test drive”.

Don’t forget, school zones are also back in effect this week, and police will be stepping up enforcement across the region, looking for drivers who are speeding or using a mobile device.  Fines for anyone caught start at $196.
