The Matsqui Transfer Station in Abbotsford is now closed for good. An agreement the city has had with Metro Vancouver since 1988 came to an end this past weekend, meaning First Class, a private waste disposal company, is now in charge of garbage collection. The city’s GM of Engineering, Peter Sparanese says this will be a cheaper option than the one they had…but it’s not the only reason they didn’t want Metro to have the control anymore.

“Part of the consideration was also that their garbage was going to incineration, and that was the concern for the City of Abbotsford in terms of, we’re looking at a service provider that would be going to landfill the material.  With First Class, they’re going to be taking their material to landfills, and there are a few options for where they can take it.”

First Class will go with some options other than Cache Creek to keep down the cost, and that could mean some landfills in the US. You can now take your trash to the First Class Transfer Station on Vye Rd, or the Progressive Transfer Station on Industrial Way.
