What if we told you you could have flawless vision, and never need to wear glasses or contacts again for the rest of your life? That’s what an Abbotsford Optometrist is claiming his new “bionic lens” is capable of. Dr. Garth Webb is getting worldwide interest in the technology.  In fact, even Facebook celebrity George Takei shared a story about it on his page this week.  Webb tells us it’s not the first multifocal lens, but claims this will be the only one to give someone better than 20/20 vision, at any distance, at any age.

“The ability for the human being IS actually 3 times better than 20/20 vision, and is actually a little bit sharper than that.  We believe the technology behind the bionic lens will help to optimize the optical resolution, thereby giving a person access to their full capacity.”

He says the lens replacement surgery can be done in under 8 minutes, is painless, and eyesight would be immediately corrected. He admits though, the lens is not able to reverse degenerative eye disease, and cannot correct color blindness.

Not only would it make glasses a thing of the past, but the tech could also be used in things like cell phone cameras.

“It’s every bit as exciting as it is in the realm of restoring eyesight….the lens has the ability to shift focus from infinity to less than one inch distance in under a quarter of a second…so the images that are rendered are precisely the same as what the human eye sees.  It’s capable of complete replication of the human visual experience.”

Webb and his group, Ocumetics, will be presenting it at an Opthamology conference in New Orleans this May, and will soon undergo clinical trials.  The first human trial participants will be blind, so no one’s vision is at risk while they prove the technology.   Once it’s clinically tested and approved, it could be available in some parts of the world within a year, and in Canada within two years.
